Church of Scotland General Assembly

Today the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland begins at 10am, and proceedings will continue until Wednesday 26th. The moderator designate, Rev John Cairns Christie, will take over duties from the current moderator (Rev William Hewitt).

More details about what happens at the General Assembly are available here

On the Church of Scotland site, there is an opportunity to ‘go live’ and follow proceedings via webcasts and it is anticipated that updates will be available via twitter (generalassembly #ga2010).

For those interested in following what is happening today, the Church of Scotland has  made available the daily papers and notices of motions (available as pdf files) together with a detailed agenda for the day.

Daily prayer resources

Sacred Space is a helpful online resource offering material for daily prayer. As the website puts it,

“We invite you to make a ‘Sacred Space’ in your day, and  spend ten minutes, praying here and now, as you sit at your computer, with the help of on-screen guidance and scripture chosen specially every day.”

It’s straightforward to use, involving the selection of a prayer which you can click through in your own time and reflect upon as you choose.

The Church of Scotland also has a dedicated ‘daily prayer’ section on its website, offering the current day’s bible reading, reflection, prayer and blessing from the Church’s ‘Pray Now’ publication. (After following the link above, go to ‘click here for today’s prayer’).

If you haven’t done so yet, it might be worth taking a look at both resources – and if you know of any other daily prayer websites, please let us know!

The MADE4U IN ML2 project team have organised another Band Night for young people in our area, following the success of the last event they held. It will take place next Saturday, 22nd May, at Coltness Community Centre from 7pm onwards. For more details about this, or to buy tickets, please contact members of the MADE4U IN ML2 project team

More general information about the work and vision of the MADE4U IN ML2 project (of which Cambusnethan North is a partner church) is available from their website or by contacting Anita, Sandra and Robert directly. The project is always seeking new supporters and volunteers, and they’d also be glad to hear from anyone willing to help out in their work.

This is Christian Aid Week

Christian Aid week runs until Saturday and many fundraising events are taking place across the country (read more about it on Christian Aid Scotland as well as the main Christian Aid site). As a church, we’ve been involved in the work of Christian Aid for many years – and during the week representatives from the congregation will be out collecting donations around Cambusnethan.

The current Christian Aid Week campaign video is available here (and is also on the Christian Aid website too):

Christian Aid Week – Edinburgh Booksale

The Christian Aid booksale, which begins tomorrow (8th May) in Edinburgh (St Andrew’s and St George’s Church), is a major event in the charity’s calendar and raises thousands to help in the work it does. If you’re in Edinburgh, and like books, it’s definitely worth a visit! It begins on Saturday (10-4), continuing all week, and closing on Friday. More information about the booksale (including a map to the church) is available on the website of St Andrew’s and St George’s Church and more information about the work of Christian Aid Scotland can be found here

6th May, Election day …

As the country goes to the polls, today may be a good time to look at the webpage of the Church and Society Council of the Church of Scotland on parliamentary affairs, as well as the Scottish Churches Parliamentary Office website and the information about the general election available on the Churches Together in Britain and Ireland website. These resources, which aren’t party specific but are generally informative, may be of particular interest to those considering political issues from a Christian perspective.

The Church in 2010

Iona ~ Maclean CrossAn interesting article on the BBC news website today - ‘Kirk seeks to connect with online congregations’ - explores the role contemporary technology and new media might have in the Church of Scotland of the future. Perhaps some discussion around such issues may take place at the General Assembly in a few weeks’ time …

Sunday service now starts at 11am

Time 2 GoRecently, we’ve just begun trialling a slightly different service time for Sunday worship – instead of meeting at 11.30am, the service is now beginning at 11am. This is likely to be reviewed by the Kirk Session later in the year before it becomes a permanent feature!

For anyone who hasn’t yet come along to a service at the Church, more details about the kind of thing that happens on a Sunday can be found on our worship page.
